Fortunately, you can cure most of the common ones with a simple eye infection remedy that can be made at home with things you have lying around.
With so many different kinds of eye infections, ranging from common ones like conjunctivitis to rare and dangerous ones like trachoma, it is inevitable that you will suffer from one at some point in your life. Contact lens wearers are particularly vulnerable to infections caused by bacteria on the lens, but these eye infections are usually easily treatable. If you are suffering from red and itchy eyes, watering and blurred vision, make your own eye infection remedy using any of the options shown below.
Teabags
Sties are small lumps formed inside the eyelid or at the base of an eyelash. Although harmless, they can get quite annoying as it may feel like there is an object in your eye. To decrease the swelling of a stye, soak a teabag in warm water and then place it over the stye. The tannic acid and bioflavenoids in the teabag make the stye decrease to half its size, making this common drink a great eye infection home remedy too. Make sure not to use the same teabag for both eyes if only one is infected, as this will spread the infection to the healthy eye as well.
Jasmine Flowers
Jasmine flowers have a beautiful scent and you might have a plant growing in your garden. These small white flowers have a cooling effect and are great for the redness and itchiness associated with conjunctivitis. Fill a glass jar with distilled water and add a handful of Jasmine flowers. Cover the jar and leave it overnight. In the morning, add a few drops of the Jasmine water to your eyes and keep doing so until your eyes are saturated with the water. This will relieve any pain and soothe your eyes. Repeat this thrice daily to really reap the benefits of this eye infection remedy.
Honey
Apart from being a great natural sweetener, honey is also a good disinfectant with soothing and lubricating properties. Add a couple of drops of honey directly to the eye or make honey eyewash by diluting three tablespoons of honey in two cups of boiling water. Use this as a rinse for your eyes several times a day to help your eye infection heal faster.
Hot/Cold Compress
Heat helps increase blood flow and loosen up any debris you may have in your eyes which could be causing irritation. It also kills any bacteria that may be causing the infection. Use a warm water compress (not too hot, as this will burn you) on your eyes as often as you like and in addition to the benefits listed above, the heat will also soothe any pain and irritation. On the other hand, a cold foment will chase away the overactive blood supply and relieve redness and itching. Saturate a small hand towel with ice water before sleeping and apply it to your eyes for an hour. After this is done, cover your eyes with a dry towel and lie down. This cold foment will also help any damaged tissues heal faster. Both these methods have their benefits and each one is a great eye infection remedy.
Potatoes
Potatoes have drying and disinfecting properties and make for a great astringent. To make an eye infection remedy out of potatoes, wrap freshly grated potato in cheesecloth and apply to your eyes. Do this every night until the infection clears up.
