Those who want to make soap bars at home for themselves, their family, or to give as a gift to someone even start a small business at home. The following methods will work to make soap bars of your own choice at home.

Main ingredients to make soap bars at home:

1. Oil: You can choose any oil you like such as olive oil, almond oil, canola oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, castor oil, palm oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, etc.

2. Butter: You can choose any butter you like such as mango butter, sea butter, coca butter, etc.

3. Sodium hydroxide: It also called Lye or Caustic soda.

4. Potassium hydroxide: It is used in making liquid soap

5. Distilled water: In soap making distilled water is used 6. Fragrances and essential oils: It depends on your choice. You can choose the type of fragrance which you like for example almond, orange, neem, mint, rosemary, lemon and lemongrass, etc.

7. Pots: large mixing bowl, Double boiler (steel pot) or crock pot

8. Molds: You can use rubber, plastic or wooden molds of your own design

9. Gloves: to protect your hands

Cold process for soap bars

Ingredients: distilled water (5 oz), Lye (caustic soda / sodium hydroxide; 2 oz), canola oil or vegetable oil (7.5 oz), and olive oil (7.5 oz), fragrances and essential oil, molds

Method: Take distilled water (5 oz) and add Lye (2 oz) into water and mix it well. Solution become hot as Lye dissolved into water. Let solution cool down at room temperature. Mix canola oil (7.5 oz) and olive oil (7.5 oz) in another container. Add lye solution into oil at room temperature. Mix well until oil and water layers become one. When solution become opaque transfers then add fragrances or essential oil 5 drops, and mix again. Transfer this solution into molds and cover it with polythene to insulate and for saponification process, after 24 hour at room temperature remove soap from molds (they will be wet and delicate) and cure (let them dry in open) for 4-6 weeks before use it. During the cure process water will evaporate from soap over the period of 4 – 6 weeks and after that it will become hard bars that will last long in shower. This method will produce approximately 22 oz soap.

Hot process for soap bars

Ingredients: Olive oil (26.5 oz), Coconut oil (6.4 oz), Lye (4.4 oz), distilled water (11 oz), fragrances or essential oils (1.5 oz), mango butter (1 oz) or any other butter and water bath (double boiler).

Take olive oil (26.5 oz) and coconut oil (6.4 oz) melt it in hot water bath (in double boiler). Take Lye (4.4 oz ) in another container and dissolve in distilled water (11 oz), solution will become hot. Measure 1.5 oz fragrances and essential oils, measure 1 oz mango butter (or any butter or any oil you like).

Method: In hot process add lye solution into melted coconut oil and olive oil mixture and keep stirrer while warm to become gel stage. It will become a thick and bubbly. When it start boiling from sides and not in middle then it become thick tares (pudding or get) not opaque it will be white (saponified). This process will remove all moisture and water from soap mixture. Now its time to add butter and keep stirring to mix butter very well, temperature of gel would be around 90 - 95 °C. Cool down it little bit then add fragrances and essential oils then mix it again. Transfer soap gel into molds and keep at room temperature for 24 hours. After that remove your soap from molds and cut it into small bars. Keep bars aside for 1-2 weeks to become hard to use it (theoretically it is ready to use). This method will produce little over 2 to 2.5 ponds soap.

Room temperature: Here, room temperature means around 22-23 degree Celsius temperature

Monitoring: To check saponification process completion, add a drop of phenolphthaline indicator into gel. If it shows pink color, it means saponification is not complete. If gel stays white or opaque then saponification process will be over.

Precaution:
1. Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide are very hygroscopic. Therefore, you have to store in air tight box.
2. During making soap you must keep everything away from your kids
